EUROPEAN FORESTS IN PERIL FACING DEFORESTATION
Deforestation is not only the domain of Asians or Americans, it is also a serious threat to our European forests. Forestry exploitation by the timber industry affects “38% of EU forest areas” and the intensification of their activities “increased by 69%” between 2016 and 2018.
In addition to the fact that overexploitation of forests does not coincide with the natural regeneration of forests, tree felling releases soil carbon into the atmosphere and subsequently contributes to global warming. Worse still, recent scientific studies have shown that soil carbon contributes to the resilience of its ecosystem and the maintenance of its biodiversity. By releasing carbon in the air, we are weakening the resilience of forests and the ecosystem, while polluting our atmosphere.
